 » Rural Clinic Requirement

Pineville Clinic, Pineville, WV

As a participant in the West Virginia Rural Health Education Partnership (WVRHEP), MUSOM offers Year Three Students an opportunity to complete at least one of the required two months of rural clinical experiences during the clerkship year. In accordance with LCME accreditation standards however, all rural placements must be completed under the supervision of MUSOM faculty. To verify appointments or to obtain appointment information, please contact Jo Ann Raines (raines@marshall.edu).

Beginning in July, 2005, medical students may receive two months of RHEP credit for one month spent at a Level III site. The purpose of this RHEP policy is to encourage rotations in the most underserved areas which have had a history of few RHEP rotations and are also Health Professions Shortage Areas (HPSAs). Level I sites are sites located in counties which historically have had the bulk of medical student rotations.

Family Health Center, Spencer, WV

Since the recent WVRHEP Advisory Panel approval of the 2-1 rural experience credit at designated sites, three of the six Clerkship Directors have developed Level III sites. Those 2-1 sites are found primarily in Family Practice and Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Additionally, the Clerkship Directors have agreed to allow those students placed at “local rural” sites for both months of the Family Practice Clerkship to be able to count both months toward the rural experience requirement. For more information regarding the 2-1 credit, please visit www.wvrhep.org/Levels/levelsprogram.htm.

The following links identify the sties available for Year Three Students and describes the preceptor and site qualifications. All students must be progressing in a satisfactory manner before being released to the rural site. The Clerkship Director has the right to cancel any rural placement should it be in the best educational interest of the student.

Family Practice Sites [Word | PDF]
Rural rotations during the 3rd year FM clerkship will be limited to 24 per year (four months per rotation cycle). RHEP rotations should be spread equitably among all medical school departments. Rural rotations will typically be scheduled at local rural sites for 1-1 credit. Requests will be considered on a "first-come-first-serve" basis. Once the maximum limit has been reached for a particular group, further requests will be denied. Students requesting non-local rural sites at a departmentally-approved site for 1-1 or 2-1 credit may request approval through the Clerkship Coordinator, Ms. Glenna Michael (304.691.1191), or the Clerkship Director, Dr. Kathy O'Hanlon. The list of approved faculty is maintained by the FM Clerkship Director's office and posted on the MUSOM web-site. The non-local rural rotation will be limited to 4 weeks. The remainder of the FM rotation must be completed locally at assigned departmental sites. Written approval is required in all cases. Without written approval, students should expect that they will not be placed in rural sites during their FM rotation. Requests for rural rotations with physicians who are not on the approved faculty list will be denied. If a student wants to pursue such a site, the student must schedule a personal interview with the Clerkship Director and must seek written approval. According to LCME accreditation standards, students must be placed with preceptors who have met department criteria and have clinical faculty appointments. Exceptions will generally be extraordinary and rare. Students unable to obtain rural placement during their FM Clerkship are encouraged to complete rural months on alternative Third Year Clerkships or by completing Fourth Year rural electives. All students must be progressing in a satisfactory manner before being released to the rural site. Housing at RHEP sites will be provided free of cost.
