Marshall Med Students Win Honors at Scientific Meeting
Posted: October 24, 2008
Five Marshall University medical students brought home honors from competitions last weekend at the scientific meeting of the West Virginia Chapter of the American College of Physicians.
Mary T. Sale, a second-year medical student from Charleston, won first place in a research competition for her poster presentation on a tobacco-related project and now goes on to national competition.
A team of four fourth-year students defeated a team of West Virginia University medical students in the Doctor’s Dilemma competition, a Jeopardy-style event. The Marshall team won both rounds, with a final score of 800 to 350. Team members included William Terrell (captain) of South Point, Paul Bailey of Kearneysville, Janelle King of Williamstown and Sydnee McElroy of Huntington.
The poster competition won by Sale had approximately 80 entrants, most of them medical residents or fellows. She was the only second-year student competing. The award qualifies her to present the poster at the national competition during the American College of Physicians meeting in April.
Her research project, undertaken with Dr. Lynne Goebel, professor of medicine, was “Use of Medicare Billing for Tobacco Cessation Counseling.” After reviewing records of more than 36,000 patient visits, they found that although Medicare paid for such counseling 78 percent of the time when it was billed, providers submitted claims for the counseling only 18 percent of opportunities.
